"My name is Jason Buff, but most people either call me Buff or J, mostly because I live in Mexico and people here usually say Hazon. Of course Buff is no better and usually comes out Boof, like Loofa or Tooth. Anyway, that's really not important. For my entire life I've been obsessed with visual art. I spent most of my early life wanting to be a filmmaker, but as a kid of the 80's there really wasn't much access to Panavision 35mm Cameras in Burlington, NC. So, after graduating from UNC Chapel Hill I headed to Los Angeles and did whatever I could find. I worked in post production, camera dept, and basically PA'd in every possible department. But, alas, my film dreams were not to be. I discovered Photoshop, and it was all history. I have been working with Photoshop since version 2. In fact, I remember when version 3 finally came out and it was like Christmas. So, suffice it to say, I have been working with Photoshop for a very long time.
Photography, on the other hand, was something that was more of a hobby. In fact I didn't even buy a dslr until my son was born in 2008. Previously I had always worked with film and photography had been more of a hobby, with the idea that "one day" I would find the time to be serious. Luckily, with the market crash in 2008 I also lost my job as creative director for a graphic design firm in Atlanta. So, I had a bit of time on my hands. From that day forth I decided to dedicate myself to what I truly loved, Fine Art Portraits. I spent every day taking session after session and retouching like a mad man until finally I started churning out some work I was proud of. It took tons of failure and overcoming my ego to reach the point that I'm at now.
In 2002, I moved to Mexico. Not on purpose. I went just to study for a break, and ended up meeting my wife. And so, now I travel to the U.S. and give workshops as well as teach online. I love not only the technical side of Photography but the psychological aspect of overcoming your fear to do what you love. I love helping students figure out what's creating barriers in the progress and help them discover their unique eye. So now you know a little about me....I look forward in taking this crazy photographic journey together."
